![]() | sudo - a popular system administration tool There are times when as system administrator you might want to give root-level privileges to someone else, perhaps someone you are training to help you with the day-to-day system administration tasks. At times like this you don't necessarily want that person to have the all-encompassing powers possessed by the root user, but you would like to grant them a limited set of privileges. The solution to this problem is a popular freeware program called sudo - superuser do. This tool allows you to grant root privileges on a controlled basis to non-privileged system users. The sudo program can be downloaded from the Internet and installed on your system with little difficulty. Even though it requires you to compile some C programs to get it up and running, you do NOT have to be a programmer to build and install the package. There are also several Internet news groups where you can get help if you run into any problems. This program is just one of MANY tools available on the Web to help you in the challenging, but exciting task of Unix system administration. |
